Rican's Music Bio
Rican has been involved in music for as long as he can remember. Whether it was singing or playing an instrument, music has been a huge part of his life growing up. He was involved in chorus activities from the 5th grade all the way to his freshman year of college. During his sophmore year of High School, he bought an electric guitar from a friend and proceeded to teach himself how to play. Along with his brother, he would often spend time transcribing songs he heard on the radio into musical tablature which he then submitted on guitar tab sites. He also enjoyed the process of songwriting and wrote many of the songs that his high school garage band performed.

Rican started his DJ career while attending college near Atlanta, GA. Playing his college fraternity parties from 1997-2001, he began by playing mostly hip-hop, rap, rock and top 40 tracks with two CD players and a two-channel mixer. Then in the summer of 2000, he was introduced to his first EDM event. It was there at the Tabernacle in Atlanta where he first heard breakbeats and immediately fell under their spell. He began experimenting with spinning on his friend's turntables off and on in the summer of 2001, but wasn't able to get serious about it until the summer 2002 when he finally had daily access to tables to be able to practice. Blending together nu skool, bassline, and funky breaks to create a dancefloor rocking sound, Rican strived to be able to bring the house down by combining hot track selection with on point mixing skills. He honed his ability in the bedroom and at house parties for several months. Finally when he thought he was ready, he made his first offical DJ appearance in February 2003 at Galactic Production's Weekly "Vibe" at the Underground in Virginia Beach. In May of 2003, Rican returned to his roots and spun at Vinyl Boy's Jen Lasher event at the Globe Theatre in Atlanta. Then in November of 2003, he earned himself a spot on the Empyreal Productions DJ Roster and a residency at their event, "Reverb." In August 2005, Rican joined the Richmond Underground Family and became a resident at their event, "Life" (then called "Level II Soundbar" when it moved to a new location). Rican has since forged a name for himself in the EDM scene as a talented, respected DJ while making numerous appearances at the following venues: The Globe Theatre, The Masquerade and Spring4th Center in Atlanta; Buzz @ Fur Nightclub, Essential Breaks @ Club Five, The Uptown Tavern, and Cafe Japone in Washington, DC; Bedrock and Shorty's in Baltimore, MD; Gingerbread Man in Harrisburg, PA; The Hide-Away, Klub Ambush, The Underground, Margarita's Cantina, The Underground Playground, The Wave, and Club Hartz in the Hampton Roads area of VA; La Finca and Lowell's in Roanoke, VA; The Satellite Ballroom and Club R2 in Charlottesville, VA; The Sedalia Center in Big Island, VA; Bridges in Fairfax, VA; and Chopstix, Europa, The Thai Curry House, Club Life, Element Lounge, Hyperlink, Aurora, Club 534, Godfrey's, WRIR 97.3 FM Richmond Indie Radio, and Mr. Bojangles Entertainment Complex in Richmond, VA.

In October 2007, BreaksFM approached Rican about doing a weekly radio show on their multi-award winning 24/7 breakbeat internet station. In February 2008, Rican and his radio show Sound System Sabotage moved to NSB Radio where you can catch it every 1st and 3rd Sunday from 6-8PM EST / 11PM-1AM GMT! Later in February, Rican teamed up to form Paranoid Androidz to put on The Downstairs Mixup Show on BreaksFM.com. After BreaksFM went down for a redesign, Paranoid Androidz went on a short hiatus. Starting in March 2009, they are back with their radio show this time on NSB Radio as the radio station celebrates its second straight victory at Breakspoll as best radio station. The Downstairs Mixup show is every other Sunday opposite of Sound System Sabotage. Check the Events Section for more details on these two great radio shows!

Eventually, Rican moved to the Promotions side of the industry for a short time. Combing with fellow DJs Massace, Fenomenon, and Token, Rican formed Vinyl Tactics Productions and threw a very successful 2003 New Years Eve event called "The Countdown." Following the success of the event, Rican and Vinyl Tactics started a weekly event, "Andrenalin." However, "Adrenalin" was forced to shut down after three months when a new venue could not be found. In March 2004, Vinyl Tactics and Empyreal hosted the outside room at "Down To Earth" thrown by Tonal Grooves Productions at The Globe Theatre in Atlanta. Vinyl Tactics has been on a hiatus, but the possiblity of another event always looms on the horizon.

Rican has been producing tracks off and on since the summer of 2001, but only recently turned his attentions towards taking the production side of his music career more seriously. He looks to combine the musical aspects of breakbeats that drew him to the music in the first place and expand upon them to create a new, innovative sound unique to his own style. Clips of some of his production work can be found in the audio section, along with several dj mixes that he's created over the years.
